Why both

Most foundations pick a lane. Relief organisations feed people and treat people. Arts foundations fund artists. The split makes institutional sense and very little human sense, because the same neighbourhood needs both and the same person is often both.

We decided not to pick. Being cared for and being heard are two halves of the same thing, and we would rather explain that repeatedly than run a mission statement that leaves out the part people actually live.

How we choose what to fund

• A named local partner who was already doing the work before we arrived
• A budget we can publish in full, including the mistakes
• Money that reaches people in weeks, not quarters
• Nothing that requires a family to prove they deserve help

Governance

The foundation is governed by an independent board with a majority of directors unaffiliated with the founder or any related business. Compensation for any officer is set by disinterested directors using comparability data and recorded in the minutes before it is paid.
